“Admiral Reyes,” Jean-Luc sat down with his cup of tea within view of the screen. “To what do I owe the pleasure?”
“Captain,” the admiral nodded. “The Federation has need of a capable ship and an even more capable crew to complete a mission.”
“And you believe the Enterprise is both?” He smirked. ”What do you need?”
“I need you and your crew to to go Najhom. It’s one of a handful of planets recently traded to the Kzinti as part of a truce. Unfortunately, it was overlooked that a small Klingon sect had taken up residence there hundreds of years ago, and the Kzinti want them removed--or else they will ‘remove them’ with their own methods.”
Jean-Luc nodded, biting his lip against the insinuation. “Understood. But a Klingon sect,” he folded his hands. “Can we simply not send word that they must be relocated?”
“We would love to, but first and foremost, they do not have a functional communication system.”
“That would put a damper in things.”
“Secondly, they’ve been isolated for so long, they’ve developed a few customs and traditions that are... more stringent than the average Klingon colony. The biggest custom is a high reverence for mated pairs. They simply will not discuss anything without a pair of Klingon to talk to.” Admiral Reyes leaned to one side. ”Both Starfleet and the Kzinti discovered this the hard way.”
Jean-Luc again bit his lip. “Understood.”
“Therefore, this mission is upon your capable shoulders. I’ll forward the mission briefing over with additional information when this call is over.”
“Thank you for your trust in us; but do you not have an ambassador or emissary you’d like for us to send?”
“You have Klingon on your ship; do you not?”
“I have one Klingon,” Jean-Luc stressed.
The admiral simply shook his head. “I trust you will figure out a solution. Thank you, Jean-Luc. Reyes out.”
Jean-Luc’s open mouth mashed closed as the screen went black. He sat in the remaining silence for a moment before exhaling a deep breath.
