This short fiction is suitable for young adults and up. There is no language/swearing, but there are mild themes of violence and lust that may not be suitable for younger readers.
I do not claim for the dinosaurs, settings, etc to be scientifically accurate. It's just a fun, potentially alternate world where dinosaurs have ruled for hundreds of years in a sort of Zootopia meets the Lion King society. Plus, there's magic!
Kind: Crested Grazer (Parasaurolophus)
Age: Adult
Coloring: Light blue with dark blue stripes
Family: Cascade (Mother, deceased), Blaze (Father, deceased)
Rain is fairly well-known in her area for her odd coloration and her ability to survive without a herd. This lifestyle has caused her to hone her abilities, create and utilize tools, weapons, and armor, and adapt to any sort of evironment she finds herself in. Shes’s basically someone you really want to have on your side.
Rain hatched during a downpour and somehow survived the floodwaters (the only one in her clutch to do so), which prompted her mother to name her “Rain.” Her father died of an illness before she was hatched, so her mother became her sole provider and protector. This created a very strong bond between them.
As a young grazer, Rain was already showing her resourcefulness. She made her first rescue when a younger hatchling got stuck in sinking mud, and she surprised her herd, and her mother, by doing so. She went on to scout out a better grazing field and even served as a lookout when she was small enough (and light enough) to climb trees. Some think this is when she began to make the leader of her herd, Thorn, a wee bit jealous.
When Rain was barely a ‘teenager,’ she heard the calls of another runaway youth in a nearby field. She rushed into action, bringing much of her herd running after her, but she was unaware that she had tread upon hunter territory. Despite their innocence in making the mistake, Rain’s herd was brutally attacked by the group of tyrants that claimed the territory. Unfortunately, her mother was one of the ones killed in the crossfire.
With barely a third of the members of her herd left behind, Thorn saw this as Rain’s last straw. Barely given time to grieve at her mother’s side, Rain was exiled from her herd and sent away. It begins to rain, and with little other comfort, Rain decides that this is her mother looking down and consoling her.
Away from her herd, Rain is forced into being resourceful and adapting a survival mindset. She uses tools and weapons to aid her herdless state, and she soon begins to continue her rescue missions. She is recognized either as a protector or as a meddler (depending on which side you’re on).
Despite risking her life for others, she prefers to live in isolation and doesn’t seek out true companionship (at least, not yet). She can be incredibly sarcastic and sassy at times (and always in her inner dialog). She lets a lot roll off of her due to her survival instincts, but her link to her mother is a guaranteed soft spot. She is driven and will never just sit back when something needs to be done. She likes exploring and keeping busy, but can be subdued and solemn when necessary.
Kind: Horned Grazer (Triceratops)
Age: Adult
Coloring: Tan with brown markings
Family: Arren (mate), 4 children (Ara, Henan, Roan, & Teigan)
Rhoger is a brown and tan horned grazer. He’s older than Rain by a few seasons, but not quite old enough to be the age of her father. He is unabashedly in love with his mate Arren and unfortunately tends to embarrass her often. She does try to reel him in when he gets too deep into dad mode, because he is prone to becoming a walking dad joke.
Rhoger and Arren had their first clutch of kids shortly after they paired up. It was somewhat traumatic, as only two of the five eggs hatched and neither survived their first winter. Rhoger and Arren were barren for 5 seasons before they at last had four eggs, and all four hatched and survived.
Being a father, he is incredibly caring and wants the best for his family and friends. He’s somewhat overprotective of his children thanks to previous mishaps. For Rain, he is somewhere between a father-figure and a good friend, and he’ll shift from one to the other depending on what she needs at the time.
Kind: Tyrant (Tyranosaurus)
Age: Adult
Coloring: Olive brown, red stripes
Family: unknown
Farro is the Ruling Tyrant of the area, and is known for his heavy hand in his rule. But for as much as he is actively judging his community, he is just as often cloistered away “cozying up” to the lady tyrants. This gives him quite the reputation among hunters and grazers alike.
Despite it all, Farro enjoys the might of nature and the small bouts of solitude he manages between his duties. He has a true sense of justice somewhere within him, and he will fight with all his might when he finds something to fight for.
Kind: Scavenger (Gallimimus)
Age: Adult
Coloring: Light salmon with lighter underside, turquoise nose
Family: unknown
Mirri is very much an oddball in her herd and area, so she is usually left alone to her own devices, which she prefers. She is an excellent scout, since she’s quite observant of what’s going on around her–despite seeming like she’s off in her own world.
She can alternate between being incredibly laid back and calm to being utterly enthusiastic about something, and her state of mind is a pleasant optimism. She brings a fresh outlook to Rain’s world, including a nickname–because everyone needs a nickname.
Kind: Windbeak (Pteranodon)
Age: Adult
Coloring: Golden yellow
Family: unknown
Treeka is a collector of objects and owns a hoard of rocks and trinkets that pile higher than her own height. She is ruthlessly protective of them, but can also never let a good deal walk away. Treeka can talk a mile a minute and lives her life refusing to wait for the next moment. Gotta go fast!
Kind: Stalker (Utahraptor)
Age: Young adult
Coloring: Various shades of tan
Family: unknown
Shrill staked his claim on a patch of land and now guards it furiously. If a grazer even comes close to his territory, he is unable to simply let them pass without confrontation–and teeth. He’s so intent on “protecting” that he barely even speaks aside from roars and growls.
