~ René Dupéré, Cirque du Soleil's Alegria, Nocturne
I've always had my own little "storyline" for Cirque du Soleil's "Alegria" soundtrack. At it's basic form, a child, known as the Dreamer, awakens in a mystical realm of dreams. He is met by the Light, a beautiful dancer in white, who leads him through his dream and helps him conjure everything he could ever wish for. But a man in black soars overhead, frightening the dreamer at first. This is the Darkness. The Light is drawn to him longingly, and the Darkness, too, is drawn to the Light, but they are unable to touch. In his final moments of his dream, the Dreamer leaves a wish behind. The Darkness swoops down to the ground and meets the Light. At last, thanks to the wish of the Dreamer, they can be together.
"Nocturne" is the final song of the soundtrack, and I've always imagined a graceful, and grateful, pas de deux. The characters have morphed over the years, but, as my token dancers, Sparrow and Gabriel fill these roles perfectly.
